Investing in Solar Energy: A Major Step Towards Sustainable Manufacturing in Gouda
Sustainability and operational responsibility are becoming increasingly important within industrial manufacturing. At Gouda Refractories, we believe that long-term success goes hand in hand with reducing our environmental footprint. The installation of solar panels on our office, laboratory, and production facilities in Gouda, Zuid-Holland, marks an important milestone in our sustainability journey.
A Strategic Investment in Renewable Energy
Since the construction of our fully sustainable office and laboratory buildings in 2020, sustainability has been a core part of our long-term strategy. As part of our green roadmap, we continuously invest in energy-efficient technologies and responsible production processes.
The latest step in this roadmap is the installation of phase 1 of a total of 3,500 solar panels across the roofs of our office, factory, and warehouse facilities. In close cooperation with our neighbouring sister company Gouda Vuurvast Services, the first 1,000 solar panels became operational in October 2025.
Measurable Impact on Energy Use and CO₂ Reduction
The phase 1 solar installation is expected to generate approximately 325,000 kWh of renewable electricity per year. This will reduce our Scope 2 CO₂ emissions by 9% each year, making a direct and measurable contribution to lowering our environmental impact.
Supported by Regional Sustainability Initiatives
This project was supported by the Provincie Zuid-Holland, which contributed 10% of the investment amount of phase 1. This regional support highlights the importance of collaboration between industry and government in accelerating the energy transition within the manufacturing sector.
Looking Ahead: Building a Sustainable Future
The installation of solar panels is more than an energy project, it is a clear statement of intent. It reflects our ambition to operate responsibly, invest in innovation, and contribute to a more sustainable industrial landscape in The Netherlands.
